Illustrations in warm, saturated colors carry the reader to West Africa in Emmanuel’s Dream, as we learn about a boy born with a leg that does not work. The people of Ghana view Emmanuel as cursed, and his father abandons him.  Emmanuel’s mother encourages him to be strong and courageous. He goes to school, he earns a living, and best of all… he learns to ride a bike.

Emmanuel uses his intelligence and courage to accomplish something astounding, sharing a message of acceptance and care for people with disabilities. His message spreads, and because of his bravery and determination, people in Ghana who have physical disabilities finally receive the same rights as other citizens. Emmanuel becomes a hero.

This picture book is an inspiring true story about a boy in Ghana who overcame adversity, disability, and abandonment to accomplish something incredible. Winner of the Schneider Family Book Award, this story is a touching way to spark meaningful conversation about disability. Emmanuel’s Dream is a world- changing story, and the message in its pages is deep enough for adults and children alike.
